Masterclass: Wearing Paper — Making Paper Garments with Surzhana Radnaeva

Wearing Paper was an intensive, experiential workshop devoted to paper as an artistic material for clothing. It combined historical context, material knowledge and hands-on construction.
The workshop began with an overview of paper garments across different cultures, from protective and ritual uses to contemporary artistic and experimental practices.
Participants were introduced to the properties of paper when used as clothing, including fibre selection, special treatments, dyeing methods, surface qualities and durability.
Practical Part
Participants worked with prepared handmade papers and explored techniques of cutting, folding, assembling, stitching and shaping. Special emphasis was placed on movement, wearability, resilience, repair and the relationship between material, gesture and body.
Each participant completed a paper garment and gained a deeper understanding of the technical and expressive potential of paper as a wearable material that challenges expectations and opens new creative possibilities.
Materials
All materials and necessary equipment were provided and included in the participation fee.
Instructor
Surzhana Radnaeva
Surzhana Radnaeva is a materials researcher, fashion designer and educator whose interdisciplinary practice bridges traditional knowledge with contemporary tools and experimental creation.
She is the founder of Traditional Futures, a project inspired by the preservation of her Indigenous cultural heritage from Siberia. Based in France, she works internationally across artistic, educational and research contexts.
Her research focuses on bio-based materials such as paper, algae, mycelium and bacterial cellulose, as well as handmade and mechanical production processes. Through garments, lectures and workshops, she explores how materials communicate their origin, time, wear and use in direct relation to the human body.
Teaching is an integral part of her practice and is approached as guided exploration. Her workshops create a space for focused experimentation where participants acquire material knowledge and develop skills through practice.
