Workshops & Education
The Art of Collage with Dorothée Mesander
Collage brings together images, materials and imagination to create new and unexpected narratives. During this two-session workshop, Dutch collage artist Dorothée Mesander guided participants through a historical and practical exploration of the medium, from early examples to contemporary artistic approaches.
Theoretical Part
The presentation included 16th-century anatomical illustrations, the work of Mary Delany, Victorian scrapbooks and the avant-garde artists of the 20th century. Participants also encountered artists’ books, sketchbooks, contemporary collage publications and examples from the instructor’s own practice.
Practical Part
Participants created:
- A figurative collage using original papers from magazines and books of the 1950s, with the option of developing a surreal composition.
- An abstract composition combining vintage and handmade papers.
- A miniature diptych consisting of two 5 × 5 cm collages conceived as a single work.
Materials
All vintage papers, magazines, books, handmade papers and cutting tools were provided and included in the participation fee.
Instructor
Dorothée Mesander
Dorothée Mesander is a Dutch collage artist based in Greece. Her practice focuses primarily on analogue collage and vintage paper, rescuing and reusing images from old magazines and books.
She approaches her works as narrative images—similar to film stills from stories that continue beyond the boundaries of the composition. Since 2011, she has participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, presenting her first solo exhibition in 2017.
Her work is held in private and public collections and has appeared in international publications devoted to contemporary collage. She also teaches collage workshops and is the founder of the Thessaloniki Collage Club.
