Introduction to Japanese Binding

In this three-hour introductory workshop, participants will explore the history, characteristic materials and fundamental principles of traditional Japanese bookbinding.
The workshop will begin with a short historical and technical presentation examining the structure of Japanese bindings, the role of paper and sewing, and some of the distinctive features that set this tradition apart from Western bookbinding practices.
Each participant will then construct an A5 book with a flexible cover. Japanese handmade paper will be used for the book’s 40 pages, while the cover will be finished with Japanese handmade decorative paper. The binding will be completed using linen or silk thread.
Through this practical process, participants will learn how to prepare the pages and cover, arrange and pierce the different components accurately, and execute the sewing.
At the end of the workshop, each participant will take home the completed handmade book they have created.
The fee includes all materials and the use of the tools required during the workshop.
