An introductory workshop exploring the Greek calligraphic and manuscript tradition, from Antiquity to the Byzantine period. Through a combination of theoretical presentation, examples from historical manuscripts, and hands-on practice, participants will become familiar with characteristic forms of Greek script and experiment with the tools and materials that shaped their development.

The workshop is designed for beginners and requires no previous experience. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between letterform, the movement of the hand, the writing instrument, and the writing surface — from papyrus and parchment to paper.

Theoretical Part

Participants will be introduced to key stages in the development of Greek writing, from Antiquity to the 13th century, through selected historical examples and rich visual material.

Topics will include:

  • characteristic forms of Greek script and their historical development,
  • different writing surfaces — papyrus, parchment, and paper,
  • historical writing instruments and the ways in which they influenced the form, rhythm, and character of the written letter.

Practical Part

Through demonstrations and individual guidance, participants will practise three characteristic historical forms of Greek script:

  1. Bacchylidean majuscule
  2. Early Byzantine majuscule
  3. Cursive minuscule

During the practical exercises, participants will work with a range of traditional writing instruments, including reed pens, quills, nibs, and penholders, as well as different inks and writing surfaces.

The workshop will also explore ways in which elements of historical Greek scripts can be adapted and creatively incorporated into contemporary calligraphic practice.

Materials & Equipment

All materials and tools required for the workshop are provided and included in the participation fee.

For those who wish to continue practising at home, specially prepared calligraphy sets will also be available for optional purchase.
