Inspired by Valentine’s Day, this workshop approached the handwritten love letter as a personal, material and emotional object, combining automatic writing, calligraphy and historical letterlocking techniques.

The session began with a brief historical introduction to the use of paper in love letters and to letterlocking—the practice of folding and securing a letter without an envelope.

Through a creative prompt and guided automatic writing, participants composed a personal text addressed to someone they loved. Following an introduction to basic calligraphy tools and techniques, they transcribed their text onto selected handmade paper.

The letter was then folded using letterlocking techniques and sealed with wax, transforming the written message into a unique handmade object.

Materials

All necessary materials and equipment were provided and included in the participation fee.
