Inspired by the Paper Clouds exhibition, Anna Onesti’s masterclass focused on handmade kite construction and on traditional techniques from Japan and Korea.

Participants constructed three types of functional kites: rhombus, diamond and shield forms. Measuring approximately 90 × 60 cm and 70 × 70 cm, the kites were made with handmade kozo paper suitable for flight.

The frames were constructed from bamboo and cotton thread and then covered with handmade papers, which participants dyed and decorated using natural pigments and inks.

The workshop combined technical precision with artistic expression, highlighting the balance between form, weight, material and air that enables a kite to fly. It also introduced characteristic kite forms from Japanese and Korean traditions, known respectively as tako (凧) and yeon (연).

Materials

All materials and necessary equipment were provided and included in the participation fee.
