An introductory workshop dedicated to the tradition of European hand papermaking and the transformation of discarded linen and cotton textiles into new handmade paper.

Over two three-hour sessions, participants will explore key stages in the history and technology of European papermaking through books, tools, moulds, and historical objects from the Triton & Shell collection. They will also observe the preparation of textile fibres and the operation of a Hollander beater before gaining hands-on experience in forming sheets of paper using papermaking moulds of different sizes, including authentic historical moulds dating from the early twentieth century.

The workshop is designed for beginners and requires no previous experience. Its aim is to introduce participants to the fundamental stages of traditional hand papermaking and provide them with the practical experience needed to begin creating their own sheets of paper.

Theoretical Part

Participants will be introduced to the historical development of hand papermaking in Europe and to the relationship between raw materials, papermaking tools, and the characteristics of the finished sheet.

Drawing on selected objects from the Triton & Shell collection and exhibition, the presentation will explore:

  • the history of European hand papermaking,
  • the use of linen and cotton rags as raw materials,
  • the development and operation of the Hollander beater,
  • the principal types of papermaking moulds,
  • the function and historical significance of watermarks.

Practical Part

Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will become familiar with the fundamental stages of making paper by hand:

  1. Selecting and preparing linen and cotton textiles.
  2. Preparing the fibres and beginning the beating process in the Hollander beater.
  3. Forming sheets using papermaking moulds of different sizes.
  4. Experimenting with both historical and contemporary moulds.
  5. Creating and working with simple watermarks.
  6. Incorporating decorative elements such as plant fibres, threads, and dried botanical materials.

By experimenting with fibres, moulds, watermarks, and inclusions, participants will approach paper not simply as a surface for writing or image-making, but as a material with its own structure, texture, and expressive possibilities.

Materials & Equipment

All raw materials, workshop materials, and equipment required for the workshop are provided and included in the participation fee.
